The village Planning Board has given the green light for a gourmet olive oil shop to open in the heart of downtown Patchogue.

This will be The Amazing Olive’s second shop, to be located between Blum’s Swimwear and Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company in a former nail salon.

The first location opened in Port Jefferson near the Toast Coffeehouse there in 2012.

Owner Steve Munoz said he and his parents, Ralph and Kandy, opened in Port Jefferson not long after his parents experienced an olive oil and balsamic vinegar tasting room in North Carolina.

At the time, Munoz said he was working for FedEx; his dad was looking to retire.

Now the younger Munoz is spearheading the opening of the second shop in Patchogue.

“I’ve been saving money,” he said, “using every penny I have to drop into this, and I really can’t wait.

He’s hoping to open up in July, just in time for Alive After Five.

“We sell extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegars, all different flavors,” he explained to Planning Board members Tuesday night in Village Hall. “Delicious, healthy stuff.”

Munoz went on to describe The Amazing Olive as an independent shop with no franchise ties that purchases olive oils from boutique producers in California.

“We also import international, award-winning extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars” that people can try on promises — with our without bread he picks up daily, he said.

The Amazing Olive will also herbs, salts and rubs, as well as olive-oil based soaps and other products.

During Tuesday night’s hearing, Planning Board chairman John Rocco and others on the board lamented the fact that there’s no bakeries in Patchogue Village.

“We’d like to have something other than a restaurant or a bar and this is a refreshing change, quite frankly,” Rocco told Munoz.

The board then approved the application unanimously.

Munoz got a round of applause.

This will be the third establishment to open up on East Main Street in Patchogue Village within this past year after opening up a first location in Port Jefferson.

The Dusty Attic opened in September, followed by Toast Coffeehouse in January.

Reached Tuesday night, Toast’s owner, Terence Scarlatos, said he couldn’t be happier to have The Amazing Olive as a neighbor in Patchogue.

“The Amazing Olive is great store, with an enormous selection of infused olive oils,” he said. “For me, it’s like walking into a food laboratory, their unique oils can really help get the creative juices flowing.

“They are a great addition to Patchogue, and I am really excited to be neighbors again.”
