For the second time in two years, the Cemetery Restoration Committee of Patchogue will be dedicating new headstones for six Civil War veterans buried at the historic cemeteries off Waverly Avenue.
There’s a special dedication ceremony scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m.
The original stones were either severely damaged or went missing, according to a Restoration Committee announcement.
The new stones are being funded through a U.S. Veterans Administration program that’s coordinated locally by committee member and former Patchogue Village trustee, Lynn Davis.
Davis will speak at the dedication, which, like last year, will be conducted by the Richard J. Clark Camp 210, Sons of Union Veterans of Patchogue.
“It was a beautiful ceremony last year and I’m glad we’ve had the help from the VA to continue this process of honoring our veterans with new headstones,” said Davis.
She also believes the program will continue to replace stones here in Patchogue, “so we can have new stones to dedicate every Veterans Day.”
Reenactors of the 67th NY Infantry will render funeral honors with a rifle salute in period uniform, the announcement reads.
Patchogue area Veterans from VFW Jayne-Lattin Post 2913, American Legion Patchogue Post 269 and AMVETS Hammond Biggs Post 111 will be present, each providing a Color Guard for the ceremony.
Mike Amodio, Past Commander of the VFW and Amvets will play Taps.
