For its third annual photo contest, Smithsonian Air & Space Magazine received nearly 900 photographs from around the world.
The five winners won a monetary prize and saw their work published in the June edition.
Among those photographers was Brookhaven’s own Michael Busch of Great South Bay Images.
Busch learned last month that he had won, but couldn’t let it be known until the magazine’s publication this week, he told greaterpatchogue.com.
The coveted Readers’ Choice Award was for a shot of the Jet Waco Biplane that Busch took from the ground in November in Pensacola, Fla., where the U.S. Navy Blue Angels were putting on an “epic” three-day homecoming show at their home base, he said.
“They were doing a crazy twilight show and the light was absolutely perfect,” he said.
Busch, a Bellport Village native, specializes in landscape, seascape, wildlife and aviation photography.
He has a big following on Instagram and Facebook.
“But this is a nice feather in my cap,” he said.
