Patchogue riverfront restaurants planning big Cinco de Mayo bash for Saturday, Sunday

|

It’s a big year for welcomers of summer and celebrators of Mexican culture, as Cinco de Mayo falls on a Sunday and people have off. And the riverfront bars and restaurants in Patchogue are ready.

Actually, they’re going to get the party started on Saturday.

‘This year, May 4th and 5th, the Patchogue riverfront community is celebrating Cinco de Mayo together,” said Mark Miller, an owner in Dublin Deck and Harbor Crab Co., which are both on the riverfront.

Miller is also a part of the Patchogue Riverfront Committee, which is organizing the efforts.

The deal is this, each location will be hosting live music on both days with no cover charges before 8 p.m. and what Miller described as “great drink specials, including Don Julio margaritas.”

“Weather permitting there will be a water taxi connecting all of the locations,” said Miller. “So you can go grab your friends and river hop from place to place.”

Should that happen, the taxi would operate from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., stopping at each of the restaurants and marinas, including Drift 82, Dublin Deck, Island View Marina, The Oar Steak & Seafood Grille, Off Key Tikki and Harbor Crab. It would be $10 for unlimited rides per day.

As of Tuesday, the National Weather Service was calling for a 50 percent chance of rain for each of the two days, with high temperatures in the mid- to low-60s.

lest we forget

Cinco de Mayo wasn’t always about gathering with amigos and cerveza, the holiday celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla, during the Franco-Mexican War, according to The History Channel.

fun fact

The original Cinco de Mayo happened on a Monday. We looked it up.
