You might say this kid is extremely coachable.
A coolheaded 12-year-old boy — while on the phone and receiving instructions from an emergency dispatcher — helped his aunt deliver a healthy baby boy at home in Flanders on Friday, police said.
The boy called 911 from the East Street house about 10:16 a.m., informing the dispatcher that his 22-year-old aunt had gone into labor. Public Safety Dispatcher Christopher Brenner immediately began giving the boy guidance on how to help his aunt with the childbirth.
Just as the baby was being born, Southampton Town Police Officer James Cavanagh arrived and helped care for the mother and newborn.
Soon after, Flanders Northampton Volunteer ambulance arrived, took over care of the mother and her baby, and drove them to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.
The cops said that thanks to the diligence of everyone involved in the birth — particularly the composed 12-year-old — both the mother and the baby are resting comfortably and are in good health at the hospital.
