Any Suffolk Police cruiser rolling through Main Street or Islip Avenue in Islip Friday morning might have a noticed a string of blue ribbons adorned to lampposts and elsewhere.
The 30 ribbons were hung Thursday night, under the cover of darkness, as a surprise show of support for local police after instances of officers elsewhere in U.S. being gunned down at random.
“We’re always calling the 3rd Precinct when we need help, and so we wanted to show them we stand by them and we appreciate them and it’s not always a one-way street,” said Islip Chamber of Commerce president Doris Kennedy.
Kennedy was joined by over a dozen people, including other chamber board members and their families, county Legislator Tom Cilmi and Islip military veteran and runner Billy Richard — who is launching a nationwide Thank the Police Tour this summer.
Suffolk Police Deputy Inspector Bill Doherty was also on hand. (All pictured above.)
“Now they can be reminded that we’re behind them,” Kennedy said.
