It’s no secret that we have Star Wars fans over at Port Jefferson Free Library.
They’ve screened trilogies, held talks and even invited in some Storm Troopers. This year — on the Lucasfilm franchise’s 40th Anniversary — they’re going big.
Star Wars Day has been in the works and is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the library. The idea for a Star Wars festival indoors came at the suggestion of Port Jeff teen librarian Khan DeRenzo.
“He and I along with several other librarians from every department, including our department heads, are working on it together,” said Salvatore Filosa, the library’s marketing and outreach librarian. “We just had artwork dropped off from Inbeon Studios to use that day.”
Star Wars Day is open to everyone, kids and adults, and will feature green screen games, Jedi lightsaber training with the Saber Guild, which is also putting on a show, and plenty of raffle prizes.
The Saber Guild, which is a not-for-profit, Lucasfilm-recognized Star Wars costuming group, will also be running a story time for the younger kids.
And, a huge attraction will be Nicholas Tsokris from the R2-D2 Builders Club. The Builders Club is an international community that builds its own replica robots. (Ever want to touch a working R2-D2? Now’s your chance.)
The day is sponsored by the Friends of the Port Jefferson Free Library.
“We pitched this idea to them and they were very excited and all on board,” Filosa said.
The folks from Red Shirt Comics are also involved and will be on hand, and with plenty of Star Wars stuff. Costuming is suggested.
