Southside Hospital in Bay Shore has been recognized by the American Heart Association with a prestigious award for the hospital’s care of severe heart attack patients.
The hospital, a part of Northwell Health, received the AHA’s Mission: Lifeline’s Silver Receiving Quality Achievement Award for its quick treatment of those suffering from the most deadly type of heart attack — known as STEMIs — caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 250,000 people experience one of these kinds of heart attacks every year.
To achieve the best outcomes after a STEMI, blood flow needs to be restored quickly.
That’s done in Bay Shore through the use of the LIFENET system, which lets EMS workers securely transmit detailed information about a patient’s initial electrocardiography (ECG) results to the hospital.
This way, the teams at Southside can start preparing for how to treat the patient upon arrival.
The hospital has been using the LIFENET system for about a year.
“It takes a dedicated team of people from many departments throughout the hospital who consistently adhere to best practices to achieve this designation and ultimately provide the best care for our patients,” said Donna Moravick, Southside’s executive director. “I appreciate our healthcare practitioners’ hard work and the cooperation and help of our emergency medical services colleagues.”
The silver award follow’s the hospital’s bronze award last year, officials said. The awards are earned by meeting specific AHA performance standards for 12 consecutive months.
“We commend Southside Hospital for this achievement award, which reflects a significant institutional commitment to the highest quality of care for their heart attack patients,” said Dr. James Jollis, who chairs Mission: Lifeline’s advisory working group.
“Achieving this award means the hospital has met specific reporting and achievement measures for the treatment of their patients who suffer heart attacks and we applaud them for their commitment to quality and timely care.”
