Paid parking in downtown Bay Shore’s back lots is now in effect

|

The bags have come off and the paid parking kiosks are now in operation in downtown Bay Shore’s back parking lots.

The Town of Islip has released a FAQ guide to navigate the metered parking.

Here are the lots impacted:

• The Town Lot at South Park Avenue & Gibson Street

• The Town Lot at Maple Avenue & Gibson Street

• The Town Lots along Gibson Street between Maple Avenue and Shore Lane

• The Town Lots along the south side of Mechanicsville Road between Park Avenue & Third Avenue

• A portion of the Town Lot immediately west of North Park Avenue between Mechanicsville & Main Street

Outside of these areas, 60 percent of town lots will be available for free parking, according to the town’s Office of Public Works. The back-lot meters follow the ones that were erected on Main Street and some side streets in the downtown area in November

In March, town officials were met with stiff resistance to the planned meters at a Chamber of Commerce of Greater Bay Shore meeting at the Bay Shore-Brightewaters Public Library.

Asked about the meters Friday, chamber vice president Mike McElwee, who owns three restaurants on Main Street, said businesses are in favor of the Main Street meters, but they feel paid parking is unnecessary in the back lots during the day.

“We hope the town will reconsider before business is effected,” he said.
