Southern State work also includes three weeks of nighttime lane closures

|

Eastbound and westbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway from Bay Shore to Islip are being shut to traffic during nighttime hours as well as off-peak daytime hours as previously reported.

The closures between 5th Avenue (Exit 42) and Route 111 (Exit 43) are all related to Commack Road overpass repairs, as well as maintenance of the Sagtikos Parkway ramp that runs over the Southern State, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The nighttime closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., with one or two westbound lanes being closed Monday through Friday and one or two eastbound lanes being closed Sunday through Thursday, DOT officials said.

One or two travel lanes may also be closed westbound between 5th Avenue and the Sagtikos Parkway (Exit 41) during the estimated three weeks of construction.

Also, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 24, the Southern State Parkways eastbound ramp to the northbound Sagtikos Parkway (Exit 41A) will be closed between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Eastbound motorists will be detoured to 5th Avenue north (Exit 42), then westbound on the Southern State and onto the Sagtikos north.

As for the daytime closures, one or two eastbound and/or westbound lanes will be closed during off-peak daytime hours, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A single travel lane might also be closed to traffic at times on the westbound side of the Southern State between 5th Avenue and the Sagtikos Parkway (Exit 41).

Those closures will last for about five weeks, depending on weather.

This is just a broad outline of the closures. For daily, up-to-date traffic and travel information, motorists can call 511 or visit www.511NY.org, officials said.
