The Post Office Cafe’s Race for MPS — now in its 28th year — has become a special day in Babylon Village.
The race, held on the morning of Babylon Fall Harvest on Saturday, drew hundreds of racers, which raised over $36,000 to help find a cure for MPS, or Mucopolysaccharidoses — is an often fatal genetic disease in children which prevents the production of specific enzymes that help strengthen the body.
All proceeds go to the nonprofit MPS Society.
The disease is close to the hearts owners of the Babylon restaurant.
“It has been a very personal race for me,” said Mark Lessing, of the Post Office, who had two children, Mark and Casey, diagnosed with the disorder. They were a year apart in age. Mark passed on Nov. 1, 2010, at 20 years old. Casey died on July 4, 2016, at 24 years old.
The annual run is a 5K, taking runners on a scenic path from the Post Office through the village to the docks and back. Before the run, there is also a 1K fun run for the kiddies.
After the running was completed, there was a bash held at Post Office’s parking lot, where there was an award ceremony and giveaways.
