Lake Ronkonkoma man charged with DWAI after plowing into road crew, killing Mastic man

Thomas Lobianco, 26, allegedly ran a red light and drove onto a Nesconset sidewalk, hitting three construction workers

Suffolk Police arrested a Lake Ronkonkoma man and charged him with driving while ability impaired by drugs, hours after he plowed into a road crew in Nesconset, killing one construction worker and injuring two others, cops said.

Thomas Lobianco, 26, at about 6:40 a.m. was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry the wrong way in the westbound lane of Townline Road when he drove through a red light at the Terry Road intersection and onto the sidewalk, authorities said.

The car struck three workers who were getting ready for a paving project, police said. The vehicle then hit an electronic crossing sign, a utility pole and a fence.

The three men were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where Joel Sicon-Porix, 38, of Mastic, was pronounced dead, police said.

Kevin Chavez-Sarmiento, 30, of Bay Shore and Jose Gonzalez-Colindres, 33, of Brentwood are being treated at the hospital for serious injuries.

Lobianco is being held at Suffolk Police’s Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at Suffolk First District Court in Central Islip.
