Driver is in custody after striking three Suffolk County paving contractors at Townline Road and Terry Road
One construction worker is dead and another is critically injured after a driver struck a Suffolk County paving crew in Nesconset near Hauppauge early Monday, police said.
The three workers, all men, were hit at the intersection of Townline Road and Terry Road at 6:43 a.m., Suffolk Police confirmed.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. A second was seriously hurt, including traumatic leg injuries, and a third suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police and sources.
The man driving the car that plowed into the workers is in police custody, cops said. Suffolk Police officials did not immediately release his name, and no charges had been announced as of this writing.
The three victims were contractors working for Suffolk County on a paving project at the time of the crash, police said.
Ambulance crews from the Smithtown and Nesconset fire departments treated and rushed the injured to Stony Brook University Hospital.
Townline Road remained closed between Terry Road and Lantern Lane after 9 a.m. Police urged motorists to avoid the area.
