Runners young and old ran through the streets of Bay Shore and Brightwaters on a fall day that reached nearly 90 degrees last month — all for a good cause.
The second Northwell Health Great South Bay half marathon, 10K and 5K races raised over $4,000 for a group that delivers health care and health education to underserved communities in the town.
“It was inspiring to see all of the runners getting their exercise while doing something for
a great cause at the same time,” said Donna Moravick, Southside Hospital’s executive director. “I appreciate everyone’s help in putting this event together and getting these much-needed funds for a wonderful group.”
The money goes toward Southside Hospital’s Community Outreach and Health Education Council, or COHEC, which includes members of the hospital as well as local community groups, faith organizations and schools. The group was formed two years ago.
Medical career days and free health screenings are among the efforts COHEC has made to
bring more health care options to underserved communities.
Nearly 1,000 runners participated on Sept. 23, a day that was capped off by the town’s first Seafest Festival at the Bay Shore Marina.
Sept. 23 was actually the 32nd annual day of races in Greater Bay Shore, though the event was long called the Entenmann’s Great South Bay Run.
Last year, the Northwell Health Great South Bay run raised about $2,000 for COHEC.
