Great Kids: East Islip senior earns National Merit Scholarship honor

|

thelemannMore than 1.6 million students sat for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last year. Only about 34,000 of those were named Commended Students for finishing in the top 5 percent.

One of those Commended Students is Devin Thelemann, a senior at East Islip High School. Thelma, also an all county musician, was recently recognized by principal William Brennen and counselor Jessica Pignataro for the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program honor, according to a district announcement.

“Devin is an excellent student and an accomplished musician in our Symphony Orchestra,” Pignataro said in a statement. “We are so proud of him, not only for receiving this commendation, but for being an outstanding member of the Class of 2017.”
