In recognition of her outstanding teaching career, Rayna Monaghan, a longtime seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher at East Islip Middle School, was honored at the third annual Teacher of Excellence Awards ceremony.

The event was hosted by State Sen. Phil Boyle last month at the North Babylon Fire Department.

During her time at East Islip, Monaghan transformed from a novice teacher to a leader in her department, working closely with the school’s literacy consultant during the last three years to implement a balanced literacy program.

She has developed curriculum with her colleagues, which she has presented at a local conference and to other districts. She also participates in the New York State Network Team Institute, gaining knowledge, which she has then shared with her
department.
