West Islip’s Lindsay McKinley is a recruiting ‘force’ at PSEG for breast cancer walks

Lindsay McKinley of West Islip has been stepping up in a big way to help Long Islanders’ ongoing battle against breast cancer.

McKinley is one of 40 PSEG employees who will lead teams this October in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, the largest such event in the country. And her team is going to be big.

McKinley’s commitment to the fight fueled her to assemble a team of 120 colleagues, friends, and family members for last year’s walk. The results of her efforts helped make PSEG Long Island the number one participant at the event — with some 900 employees, friends, and family in attendance.

“I decided to get involved with Making Strides after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago,” said McKinley, who is also a call center supervisor for the company. “Thankfully, she survived.”

PSEG’s Community Outreach Manager, George Coburn, called McKinley “a force of nature.”

“She encourages her fellow employees to form teams or join hers, and she attends committee meetings to brainstorm about fundraising ideas, such as her unique idea to host a free yoga class at Jones Beach to add team members and collect donations,” he said.

This year, McKinley is looking to step up her game by forming more teams and hosting new and different fundraisers.

“My colleagues support me in my fight against breast cancer,” she said. “We participate in the walk every year to raise awareness and critically needed funds…I’m truly grateful for PSEG Long Island’s partnership with the American Cancer Society.”

The Making Strides walks happen Oct. 21 at Jones Beach and pick up again Oct. 28 at the Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, which is in Northampton near Riverhead. Money raised will provide treatment, support, education, and awareness programs.
