West Islip senior Melodi Doganay is a National Merit Scholar semifinalist

A West Islip High School student has qualified as a semifinalist in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, the district announced this week.

Senior Melodi Doganay is among 16,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Those young people represent the top 1 percent of students from across the country with the highest scores on the qualifying Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

About 1.6 million high school juniors across the U.S. took the qualifying test.

Melodi is now in the running for scholarships worth more than $32 million, and the supreme distinction of being National Merit Scholars.

The scholarship winners will be announced in the coming spring.

Another West Islip senior, Julianna Moses, was named a Commended Student by the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program for her performance on the qualifying test and her academic promise

“Both Melodi and Julianna are very hard-working and driven students both in terms of academics as well as in character,” West Islip High School principal Dr. Anthony Bridgeman said in a statement.
