Summer-long documentary film classes start at Plaza MAC in Patchogue

|

For the second summer in a row, The Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center will offer its fascinating and professionally taught documentary filmmaking courses in Patchogue.

Within weeks, you will learn from top documentary and entertainment professionals how to write, structure and shoot your documentary.

You’ll learn storytelling, cinematography, location scouting, documentary interview techniques — and how to bring your ideas to life.

All Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials and Gen Zers are all welcome, as the course is open to adults and students freshman and up! This extensive production course will provide students the opportunity to make a short film that expresses a point of view about local issues that resonate worldwide.

Students will take instruction from award-winning filmmakers and entertainment professionals (truly!), learning how to research compelling stories, diverse camera techniques, write and record narration, and edit the different elements of the story together with graphics and sound effects using non-linear editing tools.

Shoots will be held off-site on locations during filming in concert with instruction at The Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center.

Last year, students focused on creating documentaries about the Farm to Table Movement and the protection of Heritage Chickens. With the help of Isabella Rossellini and her farm staff (see photo), the students put together two exciting documentaries that were later screened at The Plaza and posted on specific online streaming channels.

This year, the films will explore intriguing subject areas and, the class will culminate in a special screening of the films at The Plaza’s first ever Student Film Festival at Miss Rossellini’s farm in September.

Today’s media landscape is largely made up of regular folks who know how to spot a good story and use this kind of skill to document the world around them. Find out how you can join their ranks and make compelling, marketable shorts with Award winning documentarians and break down the technical and creative choices that go into crafting a short documentary.

Whether you’re looking to create shareable videos on social platforms or hoping to gather funding for a more long term project, or, if this is just one of your “Bucket List” items – come join us!

Classes start soon, on May 12, and run on consecutive  Saturdays through July. That’s May 12,19,26, June 2,9,16,23,30, and July 7,14,21,28 — from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
