West Islip elementary school cuts the ribbon on new auditorium

The little ones celebrated at Paul J. Bellew Elementary School in West Islip recently to mark the completion of the school’s sparking new auditorium.

Work on the project was part of the district’s 2015 capital project bond.

“We are very fortunate to be a part of a school district that recognizes the importance of providing students with top-notch facilities,” said the school’s principal, Rhonda Pratt.

The grand opening included a ribbon-cutting and band and chorus performances.

During the festivities a fourth grader at the school, Billy DeWitt, presented a

Billy DeWitt, a fourth-grader and a member of the school’s Leadership Club, wrote an expression of thanks, in which he admired the auditorium’s new “velvet-like seats, architecture and shiny walls.”

He then presented his work on stage to Superintendent Bernadette Burns, school board president Steve Gellar, and the board’s vice president, Annmarie LaRosa.

Sstudents also brought out handmade letter signs spelling out, “Thank You.”

The buildout from the bond was coordinated by James Bosse, director of buildings and grounds.
