The LakeHouse Restaurant in Bay Shore is perennially ranked among the best places to dine on Long Island, and the country.  Just click here, here or here.

But now The LakeHouse is being recognized by the country’s most authoritative magazine for wine lovers: Wine Spectator.

The San Diego-based Wine Spectator has honored the restaurant at the end of Maple Avenue for its outstanding wine program through its 2018 Restaurant Awards.

“This year’s class of restaurants is one of the most impressive and innovative ever,” said Marvin Shanken, the magazine’s editor and publisher. “Their wine lists keep improving, because wine lovers are eager to explore and learn.”

The previous LakeHouse location was at 240 West Main Street in Bay Shore. The owners — Matthew and Eileen Connors and Jay Gut — moved into their much larger, current location in June of 2016.

The Connors, who live in Bay Shore, moved from Brooklyn in 2006 to open the The LakeHouse, with Eileen Connors running the front of the house and Matthew in the kitchen. Matthew had made a name for himself in Manhattan, where he last ran the popular farm-to-table restaurant Veritas in the Flatiron District.

The LakeHouse has just won the Award of Excellence through Wine Spectator, with details outlined in the August edition.

The Award of Excellence recognizes restaurants whose wine lists feature a well-chosen assortment of quality producers along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style, according to the magazine.

“We are honored to receive the Wine Spectator’s ‘Award of Excellence,’ Matthew Connors said in a statement issued Thursday. “We know that the annual award is a beacon to truly discerning customers, those who are looking for the kind of complete dining experience that a thoughtful wine list can provide.”

The goal of our Restaurant Awards is to support restaurant wine programs and bring them to diners’ attention through our outreach through print, digital and social media,” said Shanken. “Wine Spectator salutes every restaurant honored in the 2018 Restaurant Awards.”

Wine Spectator began its program to recognize the world’s best wine lists in 1981.

There are three levels: The Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence and the Grand Award — with 2,453; 1,215; and 91 winners this year in each respective category.

Seven of the Grand Award winners are first timers.
