The new beer being brewed exclusively for Bay Shore’s bars and restaurants has got a name.
The name comes after a public call-out for suggestions from GreaterBayShore.com last month. Nearly 100 potential beer names were submitted through the website and GreaterBayshore’s social media feeds.
Among the suggestions, Bay Shore resident Jennifer Thompson came up with the best — as decided by the braintrust at Destination Unknown Beer Company, Bay Shore’s Restaurant Committee and GreaterBayShore.com.
So here it is: “It’s a Shore Thing.”
Thompson was thrilled to learn the name had been chosen for her hometown beer.
“That is awesome!” she said. “I have lived in Bay Shore my entire life, married my high school sweetheart and we’re raising our two boys here. Love this town. Can’t wait to see the label and try the beer.”
The hoppy pale ale — sales from which help fund popular downtown events such as Alive by the Bay — hit most of the local tap lines last month.
Dubco co-owner and head brewer Chris Candiano of West Islip describes the special brew as something “approachable for non-craft beer drinkers, but sexy enough to be palatable for the craft beer drinkers.”
The idea was born at a Restaurant Committee meeting, during which David Prunier from Tullulah’s and other restaurateurs were figuring out ways to raise funds. Prunier pitched the idea of a Bay Shore beer as a way to raise money and create a buzz and raise awareness for Main Street’s lively bar and restaurant scene.
“What better of an idea than to collaborate with one of the local breweries for some beer to help finance these events?” Prunier said last month.
As for the woman behind the name, Thompson — whose family loves the water — pitched the idea on Instagram, calling the beer “Shore Thing.”
Then the name evolved into “It’s a Shore Thing.”
She and her husband, Rob, are each Bay Shore High School graduates. One of their sons is set to graduate this year from Bay Shore and the other is in middle school.
“We knew Bay Shore would be our forever home,” she said. “It is an amazing community and so many of our friends have stayed and raised their family here. I’m extremely proud … and look forward to being a part of this.”
