If you’ve taken a stroll through the east end of downtown Bay Shore recently, you’ve likely noticed vivid storefront windows adorned with popular comic book characters such as Captain America, The Hulk and Thor. Just to name a few.

A bright green awning went up just a few days ago, giving passersby a little more information about what lies behind those colorful characters.

The site is home to the future Lost Planet Comics & Collectibles, a new comic shop owned by Bay Shore native Kevin Dempsey.

Dempsey is a freelance writer and and self-proclaimed lover of “all things nerdy including games, film, books, and comics,” according to his LinkedIn profile.

Dempsey was employed by another comic shop in Bethpage when a family member suggested he go out on his own, he said.

Dempsey was receptive to the idea, so he did a little bit of research and found an empty storefront with an appealing location and reasonable rent.

With a little bit of help from friends and loved ones, Dempsey’s dream started to become a reality.

“When we had all of our ducks in a row, we moved forward,” he said.

When asked what will set his shop apart from the rest, Dempsey indicated that comic shops are often different in their own way.

“We want to appeal to as many people as possible: comic book readers, card game players, movie fans, toy collectors, and even [fans of] Japanese Anime and Manga,” he said.

Dempsey, who is currently digging the Copperhead comic series, is still in the midst of gathering some inventory ahead of his grand opening.

Local comic fans don’t have too much longer to wait for Lost Planet to swing open its doors.

“We’re currently estimating having a grand opening mid-to-late July,” Dempsey said.  “We’re still in the middle of doing construction.”

Lost Planet Comics and Collectibles is located at 65 E. Main Street in Bay Shore.
