Police say an adult stabbed his mother 40 times on Mother's Day inside this Topping Drive home, before police shot and killed the man to end the attack.

Police shot and killed a 28-year-old Northampton man Sunday afternoon after stabbed and slashed his mom more than 40 times inside their home, cops said.

Southampton Town Police officers were first dispatched to 89 Toppings Drive about 2:43 p.m. on Mother’s Days after a woman called 911 reporting that her son was drunk and acting violently inside the house, authorities said.

While officers were en route to the scene, the woman again dialed 911, this time telling the dispatcher that her son was threatening her with a knife.

When three Southampton Town police officers arrived moments later, they encountered Steven Eastwood, armed with a knife and standing over his mother, who was on the floor inside the home, located near Wildwood Lake, cops said.

Police added that officers repeatedly ordered Eastwood to drop the weapon. Instead, he advanced toward them while still armed.

Officers initially backed away in an attempt to draw him away from the victim and de-escalate the situation, police said.

But when Eastwood turned back toward his mother and continued stabbing and slashing her, officers shot Eastwood to end the attack, police said.

Eastwood was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel from Flanders Northampton Ambulance.

His mother was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for emergency treatment with more than 40 stab and slash wounds.

As is standard protocol, the involved officers were taken for trauma evaluation and support services.

The investigation is being investigated by the New York State Attorney General’s Office— also standard protocol for police involved fatal shootings — with assistance from Suffolk Police and Southampton Town Police.

Additional responding agencies on Sunday included the Westhampton Beach and Quogue Village police departments, New York State Police, Flanders Northampton Ambulance, and Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance.
