Hikers on a trail in Montauk came upon a dead body, according to reports.
New York State Police are investigating after witnesses found the human remains on a hiking path in Montauk State Park, according to News 12 Long Island. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, nor have they disclosed the circumstances surrounding the death.
State cops confirmed the Thursday afternoon discovery to numerous news outlets, saying the investigation is ongoing. Additional details, including the age and gender of the deceased and whether foul play is suspected, were not immediately available.
The body was found on a trail south of the east overlook on Montauk Highway, according to authorities. State police detectives are leading the investigation, The East Hampton Star reported.
