The Alive by the Bay street festival heads back to downtown Bay Shore this Wednesday, Aug. 9, for the second time this summer.
For the uninitiated, Alive by the Bay can be best described as the Bay Shore Arts Festival meets Patchogue’s Alive After Five. It’s organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Bay Shore’s restaurant committee.
Here are some things to know before you head to Bay Shore:
• The first-ever Alive by the Bay was July 12 drew huge crowds to the downtown. The organizers are now strongly encouraging the use of mass transit, with the LIRR station being just a couple blocks north of Main Street.
• The National Weather Service is forecasting sunny skies for Bay Shore with a high near 79, near-perfect weather for a summer street fest in New York.
• The season’s last Alive by the Bay is in two weeks, on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
• All of the Alive by the Bay run from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., with road closures beginning at 5 p.m. Main Street is closed from Bay Shore Avenue/Shore Lane west to Ocean Avenue.
• Maple Avenue will remain open for vehicles to access the Fire Island ferries to the south. No side roads are closed.
• Police, crossing guards and security officers are on hand to assist pedestrians across Maple Avenue while keeping vehicle traffic flowing nicely.
• Cars will have to be off Main Street starting at 3 p.m.
• The serving of any alcoholic beverages outdoors will stop at 9:15 p.m.
• The town’s parking meters are in effect during all Alive by the Bay festivals. The Town of Islip has released a FAQ guide to help navigate the metered parking. (No app is available yet to feed the meters remotely.)
• The bands set up at two main stages. One is near the Boulton Center at 37 West Main Street. The other is near where Third Avenue meets East Main Street.
• The organizers have booked more portable toilets for this second festival.
