|

Bayport’s Kim Larson was the top female finisher and Brendan Martin of Huntington Station came in first overall Saturday at the 15th annual Keith Nintzel Memorial 5K race in Sayville.

More than 460 runners finished the run that concluded at the Common Ground Rotary Park.

Larson, 27, needed just 19:11 — a 6:11 per mile pace — to finish. She was followed by Megan Gubbins, 36, and Barbara Gubbins, 59, both of Southampton, whose finish times were 20:19 and 20:21, respectively.

Martin blazed across the finish line in 15:13, a pace of 4:55 per mile. Dan Gargaro, a Sayville Running Company member who won the Long Island Marathon this spring, showed up at the finish line less than 31 seconds later, good enough for second place.

Overall winner Brendan Martin with his girlfriend Aubrey Elstad, both of Huntington.

Asher Waller, 16, of Patchogue was the top finisher among competitors under 18. He was 12th overall, completing the 3.1-mile course in 18:11.

The race is dedicated to Nintzel, a former Sayville cross country and track and field member who died in 2004 in a car accident while returning to Binghamton University for his senior year, following Thanksgiving break spent with his family.

Funds raised at the event go toward scholarships awarded to graduating Sayville High School seniors, in Nintzel’s honor.

“This is a great event,” said Brendan Barrett, a part-owner of the Sayville Running Company who started up the memorial race one year after the death of his high school friend and teammate. “Keith would have had a good time doing something like this.”

Barrett estimated that the race has raised more than $120,000 over the years.
