Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and town board members honored members of Sayville’s Community Ambulance Company for the safe at-home delivery of a newborn baby boy last month.
On Sept. 23, at 1:08 pm, paramedic Melissa Blom; EMTs Daniel Schappert, Linda Kornreich, Kate Apostolico and Michael Corrigan; and Jordan Zanetti were dispatched to a call from a Bohemia resident who stated his wife was in labor in their home.
When the ambulance company team arrived and checked the patient’s vital signs, the woman’s light contractions quickly turned into one long contraction and with a single push, a healthy baby boy was delivered at 1:23 pm. The paramedics worked with two officers from Suffolk County Police’s Fifth Precinct.
The mother and newborn were transported to Southside Hospital.
“I’d like to commend this group of paramedics for recognizing imminent delivery and demonstrating their true professional expertise by remaining calm, in what is probably one of the most stressful situations a provider can face,” Carpenter said during a ceremony at Town Hall in Islip.
“Being part of delivering a baby in the field is probably one of the most rewarding experiences to have. Congratulations to this group of EMTs on an outstanding job.”
Blom, Schappert, Kornreich and Apostolico were present at the ceremony. Corrigan and Zanetti were unable to attend.
