On July 1, St. Joseph’s College will be welcoming the school’s eighth president in its 100-year history.
St. Joseph’s, which has campuses in Patchogue and Brooklyn, announced on Friday that Donald Boomgaarden was chosen as Jack Calareso’s successor after a nationwide search.
Dr. Calareso joined St. Joseph’s College in 2014.
Dr. Boomgaarden is a Fulbright Scholar, concert pianist and country fiddler who has extensive administrative experience at the college level over the course of three decades, according to a press announcement issued by St. Joseph’s College.
He most recently served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Scranton in Scranton, Penn. Prior to that, he served as dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts at Loyola University, New Orleans, and assistant vice president of academic affairs at Loyola University, Maryland.
“We are fortunate indeed to have in Dr. Boomgaarden, an outstanding leader and scholar, ideally suited to take the helm of St. Joseph’s College at this time,” said Chris Drewes, chair of the school’s Board of Trustees. “We are excited to welcome him to the SJC family, and look forward to his leadership as we enter the second century of the college’s history.”
Dr. Boomgaarden said St. Joseph’s College offers “an education that prepares our students for meaningful careers and provides them with the knowledge to transform the world for the better.”
“At a time when many colleges and universities are challenged by a rapidly changing world, St. Joseph’s stands for what is great about American education, and for what is most important to our students and their parents,” he said.
