For Walt Whitman, this Friday’s Suffolk County Division I championship against William Floyd is a chance to redeem its county title game loss to the Colonials in an overtime thriller last spring.
For Floyd, it’s an opportunity to avenge its only regular season loss this fall — a 27-0 thumping to the Wildcats on Oct. 2.
It was all made possible when Whitman held off Ward Melville, 35-29, Saturday afternoon (and then night under the lights) in South Huntington. The Wildcats are now 10-0, outscoring their opponents, 345-83, along the way.
Whitman, the No. 1 seed in the Division I payoffs, is led by quarterback Nicholas Bottoni and AJ Evans, along with a stingy defense that has recorded four shutouts this fall. Floyd (9-1) is the No. 2 seed.
They square off in the county championship at Stony Brook University’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Friday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

Floyd punched its ticket for the county championship with a 31-16 win at home over Commack. They will be playing for their fourth consecutive county title and what would be the program’s 14th overall. The winner plays the Nassau County Conference I champ — Massapequa plays Oceanside in that title game Friday night — for the Long Island championship the following week.
