West Babylon park named in honor of local soldier killed in Vietnam

The research of Kyra Duke of West Babylon High School culminated recently in the re-dedication of a local park in honor of U.S. Army Captain John Charles Pape, who was killed fighting in Vietnam on May 18, 1969.

The West Babylon resident was just 25 when he died.

Now his sacrifice will be remembered forever by visitors to park at Old Farmingdale Road. The re-dedication ceremony last month included the unveiling of a new sign, as well as a memorial plaque situated underneath an American flag.

Elected leaders from the town and county were at the ceremony, as was Pape’s brother, Eric.

Kyra was on hand as well.

Two years ago, she had completed a project that focused on the eight West Babylon alumni that died while serving their country. 

Duke created framed profiles of each of the fallen service members that featuring their names and photos, according to the town.

“Her project was on display as she addressed the crowd and read an account written by a soldier who served with Pape, citing his bravery and other admirable qualities,” reads an announcement from Babylon Town.
