The Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau saved a stranded deer that had fallen through the ice into freezing cold water at Narrow Bay in Shirley.
A Smith Point County Park ranger reported seeing the deer stuck in the ice around 4:18 p.m.
Suffolk Police officers Robert Daniels, Robert King and Gary Quenzer responded to the call and developed a strategy to safely to get the deer to land.
King deployed an ice sled, while Daniels and Quenzer held the line.
Slowly gliding across the ice, King approached the deer and lifted the fawn out of approximately 40-degree water onto the sled.
Both King and the deer were pulled back onto shore safely by Daniels and Quenzer.
The dramatic rescue took nearly 40 minutes, after which the deer was towel-dried, wrapped in blankets, and brought to an animal rescue center for treatment.
