Greater Sayville coverage is funded in part by
The Shed, your scratch kitchen for brunch and dinner daily at 21 Main St. in West Sayville.
The annual Grand Backpack Giveaway is underway.
The organizers include Long Island Tutorial Services, the Angels of Long Island and the Kiwanis of Sayville.
The three groups announced the nearly 4-week long initiative last week.
Here’s how it works: The groups will be collecting back-to-school supplies, to be placed in a slew of backpacks already on hand. This is for school children of all ages.
For Sayville area residents, they can drop off supplies at the Long Island Tutorial Services offices at 173 N. Main Street during working hours between now and no later than Aug. 22.
Monetary donations can also be dropped in Sayville in the form of a check (in any amount) made out to Angels of Long Island, which provides year-round support to families in need across Long Island.
Patchogue area residents can drop off checks or supplies to the Angels of Long Island thrift store and community outreach center at 350-23 E. Main St.
“These donations stay on the island!” said Alesia Olsen, of Long Island Tutorial Services. “Not only do they provide school supplies, but children are allowed to pick out free outfits for that special back to school outfit. In addition, the Angels have provided baby formula, food and other personal hygiene products to our families in need.”
The big giveaway event at the Angels shop in Patchogue happens Saturday, Aug. 27.
The organizers are also looking for clothing and toiletries, as well as hair stylists and barbers who would like to donate a few hours of their time.
