Jack Coan was this close to securing his first XFL win.
The Sayville product threw for 207 yards with one touchdown in his debut as the starting QB for the San Antonio Brahmas on Sunday, which was part of the opening weekend for the newly relaunched XFL backed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Coan’s team played home at the Alamodome in front of 24,000 fans against the St. Louis Battlehawks, a squad coached by former New York Jets tight end Anthony Becht. The game was televised on ABC.
It was a tight contest all game. The Long Islander scored the first touchdown of the game late with 10:42 left in the fourth quarter. He completed a perfectly thrown four-yard touch pass to wide receiver Fred Brown. Watch it below.
Coan and co. would then get the ball back, hit a field goal and go up 15-3.
At that point, Coan — a former Notre Dame and Wisconsin starter — was out-dueling the Battlehawks’ A.J. McCarron, a three-time BCS National Champion and NFL veteran.
That was until the Brahmas let up a late score with a three-point conversion to McCarron with a little over a minute remaining to spark the comeback.
McCarron immediately got the ball back thanks to the XFL’s new 4-and-15 conversion rule. The former Alabama signal caller marched down field and threw a touchdown with 16 seconds left.
Coan got the ball back with 16 seconds left, but was sacked to end it. Final score: 18-15.
Coan — who is a captain for his team — did a good job spreading the ball to his teammates all game. He hit nine different receivers with passes. His favorite target was Landen Akers — a wide receiver out of Iowa State who won a Super Bowl with Los Angeles Rams last year. Akers secured seven receptions for 35 yards in the game.
The Brahmas’ quest for their first victory will continue next week. They face the Orlando Guardians away Saturday, Feb. 26, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando.
