The San Antonio what? Brahmas!
“Strong. Stubborn. Straight up San Antonio.” That’s how the XFL franchise’s marketing unit describes the new team in the rebooted spring football league.
Coan, who fell short in tryouts in 2022 with Indianapolis, Seattle, Las Vegas and Miami of the NFL, will be behind center when San Antonio opens the season on Sunday, Feb. 19, at home in the Alamo Dome against the St. Louis Battlehawks. The 3 p.m. game will be televised on ABC.
To be top Brahma, Coan, a rookie, beat out at least four other quarterbacks in pre-season camp, including Jawon Pass out of Prairie View A&M and NFL veteran Reid Sinnett. He was also named a team captain this week.
San Antonio’s Valentine’s Day announcement of Coan as QB1 comes nearly three months after the Brahmas selected him in the XFL draft. The Sayville High School legend starred at Wisconsin and Notre Dame during his college days, starting in three bowl games.
The XFL returns to the field this weekend after a long hiatus, having been resuscitated by a group of investors that includes A-list actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a former professional wrestler who played college football player at the University of Miami (1990-94).
WWE executive Vince McMahon founded the league in 2001, and it ran for one season as an over-the-top version of pro football. McMahon reimagined the league in 2018 to focus on playing football over theatrics; its official relaunch season was 2020.
But the season lasted just five weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the operations to shut down.
The Brahmas are one of the eight XFL teams. San Antonio’s coach is Hines Ward, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ all-time leading receiver. He’s making his head-coaching debut on any level.
San Antonio’s uniform colors are yellow, black and gray.

Last summer, Coan signed as an undrafted free agent with the Indianapolis Colts, but he did not make the team’s final roster cuts or practice team. In pre-season, he threw a last-minute touchdown pass to fellow rookie Samson Nacua to bring the Colts within one point of the Detroit Lions.
Coan passed for 6,428 yards and 48 touchdowns during his collegiate career. With Notre Dame, he broke a Fiesta Bowl passing record, tossing 509 yards in a 37-35 loss to Oklahoma State.
Coan’s proud uncle, Dan Coan, a member of the NYPD, took to Twitter to share the good news.
“My man…..QB1,” he posted. “Keep workin.”
