Andrew Zimmerly started a residency at South Shore University Hospital in the summer of 2022. But before that, he and his bride, Brittany, toured the Bay Shore area.
The newlyweds, who got married last year, got one look at the downtown and knew it was where they wanted to live.
“We came here looking around and we knew right away we wanted to be as close to Main Street as possible,” said Brittany, who’s from Rockland County.
So they moved downtown.

But then they watched as the beautiful new Shoregate complex went up, and decided they wanted to move into Shoregate as soon as possible. And that’s exactly what they did.
On Nov. 15, the $175 million complex welcomed its first residents. Among them were Andrew and Brittany Zimmerly, who are both 29 years old. Both work in healthcare.
When asked what life is like in the massive, transformative project that stretches from Union Boulevard nearly to Main Street, they were quick to quote Andrew’s parents:
“They said it’s like living in a resort!” Brittany said, adding, “It was actually a little cheaper than our last apartment, plus all the amenities.”
There are 418 rental units at Shoregate. That includes 52 studios, 37 jr. one bedrooms, 200 one bedrooms, 113 two bedrooms, 12 three bedrooms and four duplexes.
Andrew, who grew up in Wantagh, and Brittany live in a one bedroom unit facing south, toward the water.
“That was a must for me, because of the sun,” she said.
But as great as Shoregate is, Brittany, who works from home, said there’s nothing like having downtown Bay Shore as her playground.
“I love the accessibility to Main Street,” she said. “He’s obviously working a lot, and I work remotely. And we only have one car. So I frequent the downtown all the time and do whatever I want with ease. I’m at Bay Shore Bean multiple times a week. And NoFoDoCo [North Fork Doughnut Company]; I know the girls there pretty well.”
But, they noted, their time in Bay Shore could be short, as Andrew’s residency at South Shore ends in 2025.
“But we’ll be here until then, at least,” Andrew said. “Depends on where the job market is.”
In the meantime, the golf simulators, billiards, gym, Ping-Pong, and other Shoregate attractions will keep them busy between nights out at Tullulah’s, their favorite Bay Shore restaurant.
But what Brittany’s most looking forward to this coming year at Shoregate is the brand-new pool in the summer.
That’s where you’ll find her in the high heat, working from home — but at the pool.
“Oh, 100 percent,” she said.
