Carrabba’s Italian Grill closed its doors in Central Islip on Feb. 23.
The building didn’t stay empty for long.
The family-owned Colombian restaurant chain Sabor a Colombia, which has locations in Levittown and Franklin Square, has just announced an expansion into Suffolk County — at the old Carrabba’s at 20 North Research Place.
This is the same expansive shopping plaza that’s anchored by Target and The Home Depot, with a new Aldi discount supermarket that just opened next door.
No opening date has been publicly announced for the plaza’s new full-service restaurant. But a “coming soon” banner for Sabor a Colombia has been mounted to the building.
For our non-Spanish speakers, the name translates into Taste of Colombia.
The Franklin Square spot opened last year at 700 Hempstead Turnpike, according to Newsday. “The photographic menu is stacked with meaty combo plates and all the iconic dishes of the South American country,” Newsday reported in November 2023.
