The Long Island Yacht Club was bustling for the return of the Mayor’s Cup Regatta and Clambake in Babylon Village on Saturday.

It was the first race since 2010.

Founded by the Long Island Yacht Club back in the 1980s, the Mayor’s Cup Charity Regatta quickly became the Island’s largest attended race each season. After years of success, however, the racing committee decided to cancel the regatta.

Now under new ownership, the yacht club restarted the tradition, which benefits Save The Great South Bay, a nonprofit that aims to revitalize the Great South Bay.

“It’s really about preserving what we remember,” said Marshall Brown, executive director of Save The Great South Bay. “We remember when the bay was not only filled with clamboats but with sailboats.”

Festivities began at 6 a.m. with a paddleboard social clean up of Fox Island.

The regatta took place at 10 a.m. when sixteen sailboats went off to race with a crew.

After that, the day finished off with a clambake from 3 p.m to 7 p.m. with live music, outdoor games, cold beer, and fresh oysters.
