Hundreds of local children on Monday received a head start on the school year thanks to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the START Resource Center.
At the third annual Backpack and Pajama Giveaway, more than 1,400 backpacks filled with school essentials were distributed to students. Hundreds of kids also each left with a pair of pajamas, courtesy of EJ’s PJs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children in need.
Face-to-face interaction

Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., alongside staff from the sheriff’s office and members of the START Resource Center, personally handed out the supplies outside the resource center in Yaphank.
Children and their families lined up at the event, which emphasized community support and accessibility, with all items provided free of charge.
The Backpack and Pajama Giveaway is part of the sheriff’s office’s ongoing efforts to support families and children in the community. The event was open to all school-age children.
