Long Beach welcomes Sweet Street, a fair-inspired ice cream shop

|

There’s a new dessert destination on the South Shore.

Sweet Street — “For All Your Carnival Cravings” — is now open at 669 E. Park Ave. in Long Beach, scooping out more than just ice cream.

Think fried Oreos, zeppoles, and funnel cakes taken to the next level.

Signature creations include The Cookie Monster, a funnel cake topped with cookie dough ice cream, cookie dough pieces, crushed Oreos, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar and whipped cream. Or Fruity Pebbles, which piles vanilla ice cream, Fruity Pebbles cereal, strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries, powdered sugar and whipped cream.

Guests can also build their own, choosing from more than 20 hard or soft serve flavors, a dozen toppings and half-dozen syrups and sauces.

From Six Flags to Long Beach

Owner Diane Martin said she and her brother came up with the idea after a trip to Six Flags, where they saw long lines for funnel cakes.

“You can get ice cream at so many different places,” Martin told Greater Long Island. “But we wanted to make it even more fun. So we brought the fun of a fair to this store.”

The Martins are no strangers to the restaurant business. Diane’s brother, Paul, owns The Bungalow, a tiki-style bar and grill with locations in Long Beach and Oceanside.

Another west-end Long Beach location is temporarily closed for renovations after recently getting its liquor license.

“The place we’re in now was the original Bungalow location,” Martin said. “We were using it as storage, so we figured, why not bring something sweet to Long Beach?”

Seasonal treats ahead

Sweet Street plans to roll out seasonal items, including pumpkin flavors and candied apples in the fall, hot chocolate in the winter, even peppermint lattes for the holidays.

“When customers come in with requests, I try my best to accommodate,” Martin said. “It’s a learning experience, but I want to make everyone happy.”

The shop also offers vegan and sugar-free ice cream flavors.

Sweet Street is open seven days a week, from 2–10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 10 p.m. on weekends.
