One young man is dead and another is in jail Saturday morning in the wake of a fatal DWI accident on Route 347 in Stony Brook just after midnight, authorities said.
Suffolk County police said Jerry Diaz, 24, of Nesconset was riding a 2022 Honda motorcycle westbound on Route 347 (also known as Nesconset Highway) when he collided with a northbound 2017 GMC truck that was turning left onto the highway from New Moriches Road at 12:22 a.m. The location is near Whole Foods Market and the Smith Haven Mall.
Diaz died at the scene, police said. The GMC truck driver, Mark Anthony Giordano, 25, of St. James, was charged with driving while intoxicated. He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Saturday.
Both vehicles were impounded. Major Case Unit detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631.852.6553.
