Emergency workers airlifted an East Patchogue man to Stony Brook University Hospital Sunday night after a fireworks-related explosion inside his garage apartment at the end of Pine Neck Avenue, Greater Long Island has learned.
Police said John Philpotts-Kerr, 65, was handling fireworks inside his apartment, located at 138 Pine Neck Ave., when the firework unexpectedly detonated in his lap, injuring his groin.
Philpotts-Kerr was taken via medevac helicopter to the hospital for treatment of serious physical injuries.
A source with knowledge of the case said the man suffered serious lower-body trauma, including injuries to the man’s groin area and his leg.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene about 5:40 p.m., police said. Multiple police units and other emergency personnel responded.

No other injuries were occurred in the incident. Investigators were still at the scene of the incident at the time of publication, police said.
