‘Home Alone’ vibes as Medford kid evades burglar

|
12-year-old boy was home alone when a burglar broke into his home in Medford on Tuesday.

For a brief moment inside a home on Eagle Avenue in Medford, it felt like a real-life version of “Home Alone” — minus the booby traps and holiday soundtrack.

A quick-thinking 12-year-old boy hid and called police Tuesday afternoon after hearing glass shatter and realizing an intruder had broken into his home, Suffolk County police said.

Authorities noted that the child was inside the Eagle Avenue residence when he heard a kitchen window break and footsteps moving through the house. The boy jumped out of his bedroom window, spotted an unknown man inside the home, and ran to hide in the backyard, where he called 911 about 12:50 p.m.

Sixth Precinct patrol officers arrived within three minutes and found the suspect inside the house, police said.

The child was not injured.

Police arrested Christian Garcia, 53, who is homeless, and charged him with third-degree burglary and possession of burglar’s tools. He was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, at First District Court in Central Islip.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Suffolk Police Sixth Squad detectives at 631.854.8652.
