Island 16 in Holtsville reopens after safety shutdown, movies resume Friday night

Island 16 movie theater complex reopens in Holtsville after two-day safety shutdown.

Island 16: Cinema de Lux in Holtsville has been cleared to reopen following a two-day closure for safety concerns, Greater Long Island has learned.

Brookhaven Town officials confirmed to GLI that the town’s fire marshal has given the movie theater the green light to welcome the public again, just in time for scheduled Friday night movie showings.

A theater employee told GLI that Friday night’s movies will be shown as planned and added, “Everything will be back to normal on Saturday.”

A town spokesperson said the Island 16, operated by Showcase Cinemas, will be penalized with summons for failing to maintain a required fire detection system and for failure to maintain means of egress (due to exits that were blocked by snow during operation).

Closed Wednesday morning

The theater had been closed since Wednesday as maintenance crews addressed issues flagged during a recent fire marshal inspection.

A notice posted on the theater’s front door earlier this week had stated that Island 16 “has been deemed unsafe for occupancy” by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Public Safety – Division of Fire Prevention.

The temporary closure came in wake of the blizzard that swept across Long Island earlier this week, which may have contributed to some of the conditions that prompted inspection and repair, town officials said.
