From Brooklyn to Babylon Village, it turns out a good pastry is worth the ride.
That was the case when Giuseppe Falanga — the on-camera half of the popular food-tour social media brand Brooklyn Bitess — took a road trip out to Long Island. And in a detail locals will surely appreciate, he even got the phrasing right: he was “on” Long Island.
The stop: Mario’s Pasticceria on Main Street.
The review: “Gooood” and “delightful.”
Run by Falanga and his wife Sabrina, Brooklyn Bitess has built a following that’s closing in on one million followers across social media, fueled by their passion for Italian food, neighborhood restaurants and classic bakeries across New York City and a little beyond.
Standing outside Mario’s on a Sunday earlier this month, Falanga held up a freshly filled sfingi — a traditional Italian pastry packed with sweet ricotta cream.
“Look at this sfingi we got here,” he said, sounding more like “Look at dis sFEEEN-jee we got heah” with Falanga’s charmingly thick Brooklyn accent.
“It’s massive. It is literally huge. It’s heavy,” Falanga raved. “It was actually filled on the spot for us. So excited to try it out.”
Breaking the pastry open to reveal the thick ricotta filling inside, Falanga then sunk his teeth in for a bite before offering an immediate review.
“Oh, okay. This is gooood,” he said. “This sfingi here, absolutely fresh.”
What stood out most, he added, was the simplicity of the filling.
“You can see here there’s no chocolate chips on the inside… I’m wondering if it’s from Italy, the ricotta cream,” he said in the video post. “This is what it’s all about. Keep it simple, keep it fresh, keep it delightful.”
