A list of 9/11 memorial ceremonies across Long Island

Wednesday marks 23 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, one of the darkest days in U.S. history that took the lives of thousands.

Long Island communities are coming together to hold a day of remembrance, vigils and pay tribute to those who tragically died.

Below is a list of memorials happening across Greater Long Island’s coverage areas on Sept. 11.

Village of Brightwaters

  • At 9 a.m., the village is holding a tribute ceremony at the top of the Brightwaters Canal on Montauk Highway. 
  • Attendees are invited to help place 2,977 flags at the canal, signifying the number of lives lost. 

Islip

  • The Town of Islip is honoring the day with its annual memorial service on Sept. 11 at 5p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, located outside next to Town Hall (655 Main St.) 
  • There will be a moment of silence and reading of the name of the 90 Islip Town residents who died on 9/11. 

Babylon 

  • The Town of Babylon and the Fire Chief’s Association are having their annual memorial service on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Hometown Memorial between Overlook and Cedar Beach. 
  • There will be a moment of silence and reading of the name of the 48 Babylon residents who died on 9/11. 

Riverhead

  • The Town of Riverhead will have its Sept. 11 memorial services in Calverton’s Riverhead World Trade Center Memorial Park at 10 a.m.
  • The Sound Park Heights Civic Association will hold its annual candlelight walk at 9/11 Memorial Park on Sound Avenue. The procession will begin at 6 p.m., starting from Marine Street in Reeves Park and ending at the memorial park.

Farmingdale 

  • Farmingdale State College is holding its annual 9/11 memorial ceremony on Sept. 11 at 9:45 a.m. at the Campus Center. 
  • Students, faculty, and others in the campus community are welcome to attend. 

Patchogue

  • The Village of Patchogue will be hosting a remembrance at 9/11 Memorial Park, which is located on the Great South Bay on Maiden Lane, starting at 9 a.m. Click here for more info.

Smithtown 

  • A Rememberance Ceremony is planned for Sept. 11 at 3 p.m. at the 9-11 Memorial Park in on Main Street in Smithtown (the north side between Bank Street and Landing Avenue.) 
  • There will be a moment of silence and reading of the name of the 53 Smithtown residents who died on 9/11. 

Long Beach

  • The City of Long Beach and Long Beach Fire Department are holding a memorial ceremony at 7 p.m. at West Park Avenue and Lafayette Boulevard. Click here for more.
