After three decades, Outback Steakhouse in Merrick calls it a day

|

Outback Steakhouse is no longer blooming in Merrick.

The beloved mainstay — we’re told the restaurant had been in business at 2124 Merrick Mall for some 30 years — dished up its last ribeye and Aussie Cheese Fries on Sunday.

Merrick’s Outback is now permanently closed. The signs were taken down today, Monday.

A few heavy-hearted employees had also gathered to say goodbye to one another. They floated rumors that the closure had to do with lease negotiations.

Greater Long Island couldn’t confirm as much.

But, the employees said, Long Island’s other Outback locations will remain open. That includes Westbury, Lindenhurst, Holbrook, E. Setauket and Commack.

Outback Steakhouse is part of Bloomin’ Brands, Inc., a Tampa, Florida–based casual-dining restaurant company. As of August 2024 there were approximately 678 Outback locations in 44 U.S. states and territories. according to one data source.

Back in February of 2024, Bloomin’ Brands announced it would close 41 underperforming restaurants across its portfolio.
