Aldi celebrated its grand opening last week at 5147 Sunrise Highway in Bohemia, located in the Sayville Plaza where Kmart once operated.
A special ribbon-cutting was held on Aug. 25, during which community members, elected officials, and eager shoppers welcomed the grocery store to the neighborhood.
Kmart closed in 2020, leaving behind a wasteland of sorts at Sayville Plaza. Kmart, Pier 1 Imports, Office Max, Borders, Sports Authority, Modell’s and Babies “R” Us all once thrived in the shopping center, before closing for good and leaving behind empty storefronts.
But the plaza has since seen a resurgence. The new Aldi Aldi supermarket and the home decor store At Home have opened, joining other retailers, such as Bed, Bath & Beyond; Panera Bread; The Vitamin Shoppe; Old Navy; and GoHealth Urgent Care.
Aldi in Bohemia is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
