All about La Pizzetta Gourmet Market, now open in Bayport

|

Picture this: You swing by for a cappuccino in the morning, and by dinner you’re walking out with a hot tray of baked ziti — and maybe some imported olive oil, too.

That’s how Tori Mondi describes La Pizzetta Gourmet Market, a new Italian takeout spot and specialty shop her family opened this past fall, in Bayport at 578 Middle Road.

The place is run by the Mondi family, who’ve been in the pizza and restaurant game on Long Island for nearly 40 years.

“We have shelves of specialty Italian items that you may not always find at a regular grocery store,” Mondi told Greater Long Island.

How it happened

The idea for La Pizzetta had been simmering for years.

The Mondi family has deep roots in the local food scene, having previously owned Luigi’s Main Street Pizza in Eastport and Piesano’s on Shelter Island, both longtime neighborhood staples.

But they always wanted something a little different — a spot that blended old-school Italian takeout with a neighborhood market feel.

“We’re no-frills Italian food,” Mondi said. “We want it to feel like you’re stopping at your nonna’s house to pick up dinner.”

So they went for it. They found a location right in Bayport, started testing recipes, brought in their favorite Italian imports, and called it La Pizzetta — which means “little pizza.”

If you go

La Pizzetta Gourmet Market is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all for takeout.

On the menu:

  • Fresh-baked bread (made daily)
  • Traditional pizzas
  • Hearty pastas like rigatoni alla vodka and lasagna
  • Hot and cold sandwiches
  • Egg sandwiches and pastries

There’s also a market section filled with imported Italian goods — think canned tomatoes, olive oils, sauces and pastas.

And the coffee? Locally roasted by Hampton Coffee Company, another Long Island favorite.

Catering is also a big part of the plan.

“We want to be that one-stop shop in Bayport,” Mondi said. “We want to be a go-to for catering. We can cater any size party or event.”
