Here’s the deal with the brand-new Purity Barn shop in Sayville.

They sell the country’s finest dog and cat food at prices competitive — often less expensive — with big brands at major retailers.

They provide financial support to rescue groups.

And, they now deliver.

Owner Matt Reagan of Bayport, who runs Purity Barn with his children, says they also seek to be a community hub for animal lovers.

“We want you to bring your dog into the shop, to be a destination center to come and visit,” he said. “And for our nervous friends, we are happy to open the store just for them to walk around and get the opportunity to pick out a bone for themselves.”

“We do it all the time,” he said of the private shopping experience. “Just ask and we’ll set it all up and give you a few minutes of Kardashian-style shopping.”

Purity Barn sells everything from kibble to freeze-dried and raw alternatives for dogs.

“This is a place to weigh your options and speak to nice people that can educate you on the products we carry, and then let everyone be able to make the choice that suits their family the best,” Reagan said.

He and the family — son Liam and daughter Samantha — are especially proud of what they call Tucker’s treat room, with one of the largest variety of dog treats anywhere.

“The idea came from visiting the great candy store in New York City, Dylan’s Candy Bar,” Reagan said. “We thought, what if a dog could go visit a place with every kind of treat available to him?

“That was the beginnings of Tucker’s treat room.”

This is a one-stop shop, Reagan says.

For food and treats, they carry sought-after brands such as Stella & Chewy’s, Nature’s Logic, Top Quality, Orijen, Bocce’s Bakery, Primal, Instinct and Red Barn, as well as hundreds of other brands.

“People who find us often say the same things, that we need to spread the word about all these products, Reagan said, “because they’ve been looking all over for them.”

Purity Barn is located at 66 Main Street, next to Sayville Pizza and across from Starbucks. There is parking in the rear.

FUN FACTS ABOUT DOG FOOD

• When you open a bag of food, it’s good for about two weeks only, Reagan tells us. After that, the food starts to break down and becomes rancid.

• Many common dog food options in big stores are filled with corn and potatoes as their main ingredients. The largest manufacturer of dog food gets many of its products from China and other countries with different quality standards. Purity Barn food is all sourced from the U.S.

• Whatever food you feed your dog, you should know the first ingredient on the back of the bag. It should match the picture on the front of the bag. For instance, if you buy beef dog food and the first ingredient is corn, that is false advertising and possibly harmful to your dog.

• Healthier food equals happier dogs, and hopefully a longer life with less visits to the vet.

There are many small changes you can make to help your dog, from adding moisture with items such as goat’s milk to bone broth, while trying different diets when your dog is showing signs of discomfort.

Purity Barn is here to help you along the way.
